All right SRM… this one is for you!!!
Went to the Sloan show at the Bootleg Theatre last night. I wish it was in the theatre and not the bar, but what can you do… Amazing musicians, great guys and a wonderful band. After 10 albums and 20 years together, they are still having fun and sound so good. Their new album The Double Cross is a bit Squeeze and Marshall Crenshaw and everything good. Grab it. I highly recommend this Canadian outfit who many feel have the best Canadian Rock album of all time in Twice Removed! But Andrew, you need to sign my poster. I could not find you after the show.
What a crazy musical night it was, too. Glasvegas was in town. So want to see them. Their new album, Euphoric ///Heartbreak \\\ kicks some -ss. And Steely Dan was at the Greek. How can I be at three places at once? Please let me know.
In the car on the way down, my buddy Rob asked me if I had been listening to a band he gave me a while ago. I told him it had been some time, so out came the Embrace. We like each other, but I am talking about the band.
Embrace – Out Of Nothing
Some call them Coldplay’s little brother. Chris Martin wrote the second track here, “Gravity.” Others call them Oasis’ little brother and also compare them to The Verve. I’ll go with the latter because it is more accurate and they have been around a lot longer than CP AND because I am not talking about CP anymore. I will not mix politics and music here but they took a one-sided stance by promoting a song called “Freedom For Palestine,” and I think are sending the wrong message to their fans. The amount of ignorant, anti-Semitic and hateful remarks on their fan page is more than enough evidence of this… But I digress. Read more about this and Weiner’s Weiner at Band of One.
This English Post-Britpop band… I know, I know… started in 1990 and are supposed to have a new (their 6th) album out this year. This one came out in 2004 and has had good success in the UK, but little attention here. That is too bad, as they are well worth listening to.
I can’t hold you down and make you listen to anything… but I can give you a warm embrace when I see you… or for now, send one through this blog and gently nudge you to check out some of these great bands you may not know. This is my job as I see it. So thank you and good night.
